“What successful people know and do to define and hit their targets in life and business!”
Here is my thesis... Everything you do will take you closer to or further away from achieving your purpose. Success people focus on the things that matter and don't get distracted with the noise in their personal Journey to Success.
Easier said than done, right? Absolutely, many people wander through life simply reacting to what comes their way. They are drifting and vulnerable to allowing others to define their life for them. After all, unless you specify a target, how are you going to hit it? But you are different! You are intentional and proactive. You aspire to live a life of purpose and significance. How do I know? Because you are taking the time to read this post.
Have you ever asked yourself, “What makes successful people successful?” I’ve been intrigued with this question for most of my life, so I have studied those that have actually achieved the allusive quality we call success. Through interactions and observations, my passion is seeking to understand the factors that drive success so that I can articulate them in a way that helps others to accelerate their own personal Journey to Success. I have focused on the following questions:
- What motivates successful people?
- How do they find their unique niche in life – that “one gift” that brings them true success?
- How do they make decisions?
- What specific traits lead them to success?
- Is success the result of their natural ability or learned behaviors?
- What inspires their vision?
- What are their values?
- What is their thought process?
- How do they approach life?
- Is there a method behind the madness?
- What are their goals? Do they write them down?
- How do they stay focused?
- What drives their commitment?
- How do they track their performance?
- Ultimately, how do they achieve and maintain success?
Strategy Execution for Life
Pondering the questions above, I have distilled it down to a simple formula to help you keep 1st things 1st.
Imagine living your life to its fullest … have you created a roadmap that will guide you to that destination? Just as a gifted architect draws a detailed blueprint to serve as a guide in building an amazing home, successful people develop personal blueprints and roadmaps to guide them from where they are to where they want to be… and then they commit to the journey. Success does not happen by accident – it happens when you declare your purpose, align your resources and commit to doing the things that will take you to your desired destination.
I believe everyone has a unique purpose in life. I am so passionate about this subject that I am currently working on a book entitled, Is Your Life OnTarget?. Based on over two decades of study to identify the common characteristics of successful people, the OnTarget Model provides a framework based on three shared characteristics... Purpose, Alignment and Commitment.
- It all starts with declairing your Purpose in crisp and compelling terms
- Aligning your unique gifts, abilities and resources to your targets by creating your personal blueprint and roadmap to success
- Committing to your personal journey with a keen focus on execution; doing the right things, the right way, at the right time so that you achieve your desired outcomes. Simply put, the difference is in the doing so get going!
This model is founded in my 20 plus years of experience helping business leaders succeed, so let eximine things further by looking through the lens of business…
A business exists to fill a need. Whether it is offering a product or a service, a business must identify a niche in the market where it can rise above the competition. Success is then driven based on two key factors: Character and Competence. Character focuses inward (i.e., who you are on the inside) while Competence focuses outward (i.e., who you are on the outside / how the world perceives you – your brand).
For example, character address the distinctive or defining operating principles such as corporate mission, vision, values and goals; it’s the foundation on which you stand. Competence is the ability to deliver against your stated objectives; your ability to produce results. Over time, a business builds trust in the marketplace by making promises to its customers and then working diligently to fulfill those promises and the result is something we call brand or reputation. It’s ultimately the brand, and what it represents, that drives others to ignore or embrace the products and services offered. Success brands are the result of successful customer experiences through consistent fulfillment of expectations.
Life is no different… your personal brand represents a promise you make not only to yourself, but to the others around you. At the heart of every business is a mission statement, supported by a strategy, goals to serve as guideposts, alignment of resources and focused activities. One should approach life in the same manner.
A business cannot be all things to all people. Neither can an individual. Successful businesses define their product and service offerings, build their core competencies, align their assets, and take their strengths to market. Business plans are effective tools for capturing corporate intent.
People must also discover their purpose, align their resources and commit to a course of action in order to reach their potential and achieve their dreams. Have you considered developing a strategic execution plan for your life? As the case with business, there is a lot to be said for planning your work and then working your plan. It all starts with defining targets around the 5 dimensions of your life: Faith, Family, Fitness, Financial and your Function.
What’s your T.A.R.G.E.T.?
T - Target. Define your target in crisp and compelling terms.
A - Aim. Take dead aim.
R - Resources. Align your resources.
G -Get Going. It’s the doing that makes all the difference.
E - Embrace. Embrace the journey and model your desired behaviors.
T - Tenacity. Practice makes perfect, train for results and never, never, never give up!
Just as a picture frame enhances an artist’s painting, my goal in my forthcoming book and blog articles is to provide you with the framework (models, tools and templates) and inspiration to create your own roadmap to success. My hope is that you will use that roadmap to help guide your path in achieving your purpose and in the process, enjoy a more complete and enjoyable life, a Life OnTarget.
Thanks for reading, be sure to share with your friends, and have a great Father's Day Weekend!
