“We're so busy watching out for what's just ahead of us that we don't take time to enjoy where we are.” - Bill Watterson

My Story Growing up as a naturally high performer, I felt like my achievements were the best part of me and what others loved most about me. Anything short of perfection was perceived as unacceptable and disappointing. In my growth process, I learned how to be proud of my achievements but not be defined by them. Within the context of a strong support system, I learned that people accepted me for who I am and not what I do or achieve.  This reality was profoundly freeing and I’ve dedicated myself to help others achieve out of freedom, not fear.

How I work Many times students have been able to keep anxiety at bay yet at some point, it escalates to a point where it starts manifesting in physical symptoms like insomnia, stomach issues, or panic attacks that can no longer be ignored. School, sports, or other activities that were once loved are now a source of fear and are avoided at all costs. For the kid, teen, or adult who feels they can only relax or take the mask off behind closed doors, I want that to be my door.

I am passionate about working with kids, teens, and young adults who live in this constant fear and are thus crippled by it.  In this process, they can identify and USE anxious or uncomfortable feelings instead of being fearful of them.  By using their anxiety instead of being held back by it, they can see the emotions that they were ashamed of previously as being an asset, not a flaw. In therapy, I help clients identify and even accept that as high achievers, feeling anxious is normal and can be used to help them if they have the proper tools.

I’m passionate about breaking the stigma of therapy for males and often use everyday analogies, sports or movie references, or whatever connects with the client. When becoming a student of my clients, I gain their trust and allow them to feel that I am truly FOR them.  By setting aside the clinician/client barrier, I leave psychological jargon at the door and get to know my clients as people, not the disorders they can be easily defined by. Therapy can happen in an office or on the trails around the office, whatever helps the client feel comfortable enough to become known and understood.

About Stephen I have learned first-hand the impact play and having fun has on my own personal well-being. I love going on walks with my wife and son, getting competitive over a game of cornhole (yes, that's a thing), or writing creative stories to remind myself of the simple joys in life. It is my desire to share this same joy with others who want to remember how to have fun and relearn what it means to play.

Stephen’s session fee is $150 per 50-minute session.
